Can the United States take over the Panama Canal?

The Panama Canal stands out for being one of the most important commercial routes in the world.

However, it is currently facing a crisis due to the extreme drought that has reduced the number of ships that can cross it, according to CNN analysts .

To solve this, Panamanian authorities propose the construction of a dam, which has sparked controversy due to the displacement of people . In the midst of the crisis, President Trump has not stopped insisting that the United States regain control of the canal.

Since Trump returned to the White House on January 20, he has claimed, without evidence, that China is the one who really has control of the canal, in addition to criticizing on multiple occasions the tariffs imposed by Panama.

Along these lines, he has suggested that he could use military force to take back control of the canal . As expected, the Republican’s statements have generated a rejection by the government of Panama and its president, José Raúl Mulino, has insisted that control of the canal is not in question.

Defies history Panama Canal

The United States built the canal in the early 20th century and managed it for decades. However, after years of negotiations, Panama assumed full control in 1999, after the United States ceded it through the Torrijos-Carter Treaties.

Since then, the country has successfully managed the canal, making it a pillar of its economy. Today, the canal carries more than 3% of the world’s maritime trade , however, its operation depends on rainwater, making it vulnerable, especially in times of drought.

Despite President Trump’s statements, experts say his threats are unlikely to come to fruition, largely due to existing international agreements, as well as logistical and environmental challenges. However, it is still a concern, as his rhetoric is more focused on obtaining commercial benefits, while in Panama, the canal has become part of its national identity.
